B. house : building
C. village : town
D. jetliner : biplane
E. chimney: fireplace

SYLLABUS
Materials Notebook, Folder, Index cards, Pencils Goal This is an elective course for students who want to improve their reading ability and writing effectiveness and, generally, enrich their enjoyment of life. After this course, students should have a greater ability to understand the language around their lives through a much larger cache of vocabulary in their memories, a greater understanding of word usage, as well as the general tools for deciphering words that were not part of this course’s repertoire. Overview - Every week or so, you will receive a list of 20 words.
- Each group of 20 words will be considered a unit.
- Each unit will have a theme.
- During the week, we will engage in various activities to commit these words to memory. Often, these activities will include drawing pictures, playing games, using words in day-to-day conversation “assignments,” conducting Internet word searches, keeping a list of confusing words, and more.
- You will be required to write sentences using each word in every unit. These sentences must be written with the following in mind: context, spelling, and usage.
- You will be required to make flashcards (using index cards) for every word in every unit.
- You will be responsible for keeping all flashcards for the entirety of this course.
- You will prove your knowledge of these words in a written test.
- Each unit will be tested.
- Words from old units will be randomly revisited on each test.
- At the time of midterms (the end of this course), you will be tested on ALL units covered in the course. Suggestions - Be careful in your note-taking!
- Buy A LOT of index cards!
- Keep all flashcards in an envelope.
- Practice words daily, not just before tests.
- Use my website!

2. Notes- analogies
Analogies- tests of word relationships
: = is to
:: = as
Strategies for Solving Analogies
1. Consider parts of speech... They remain consistent from the problem set to the answer set.
2. Think of an analogy like an equation... Both "sides" must be exact in their structure.
3. Make a sentence showing the relationship between the first set. (The second set has to be able to fit into that sentence exactly.)
4. Keep it simple.
5. Use the process of elimination to rule out answer choices.
Example
SKYSCRAPER : SHACK ::
A. elevator : escalator
B. house : building
C. village : town
D. jetliner : biplane
E. chimney: fireplace
Answer- D
Sentence- A skyscraper is a bigger, more modern version of a shack. A jetliner is a bigger, more modern version of a biplane.

Goal
This is an elective course for students who want to improve their reading ability and writing effectiveness and,
generally, enrich their enjoyment of life. After this course, students should have a greater ability to
understand the language around their lives through a much larger cache of vocabulary in their memories, a
greater understanding of word usage, as well as the general tools for deciphering words that were not part of
this course’s repertoire.
Overview
- Every week or so, you will receive a list of 20 words.
Suggestions
- Be careful in your note-taking!
- Buy A LOT of index cards!
